From the book PEACE AT ANY PRICE: How the World Failed Kosovo comes this paragraph:
“Looking down at this overwhelmingly rural country, it is hard to believe that on the cusp of the millennium it had been the obsessive focus of the greatest military alliance the world had ever known. For the first and only time in its 50-year history, NATO had gone to war, its goal to stop massive human rights abuses. Between 24 March and 10 June 1999, NATO warplanes flew 38,400 sorties and dropped or fired 26,614 bombs and rockets on Kosovo and Serbia. NATO’s immediate military objective had been to compel Serbia’s authoritarian leader, Slobodan Milosevic, to withdraw his soldiers and police from Kosovo. Milosevic refused and instead his forces stepped up their repression of ethnic Albanians. Kosovo was convulsed by terror, and a stream of almost a million refugees poured into neighboring countries. After 78 days of bombing, NATO achieved its goal of driving Serbian soldiers and police out of Kosovo.”
The price for freedom comes at great cost. The International Community is doing everything possible to help this small child of a country to learn to walk, run, enjoy life, and grow into a responsible adult member of the International family.
Prishtina High School is dedicated to the same objectives but also sees the deeper responsibility. All of the American full time teachers are believers in Jesus, the Son of God. They know that Heaven wrote the ultimate story of peace at any price by sending Christ to pay for the sins of the world. Into this country’s context they have found themselves striving to influence a population that is less than 0.2 percent Christian.
Studies have shown that the second highest influence for young people is from teachers. To this task Prishtina High School has been called and is dedicated to not failing this newest democratic country. It is the writer’s personal conviction that PHS has a Christian and moral responsibility to be here to help heal a people group that has been ripped apart and savaged for centuries. Healing will only come by holding up the ‘wounded, striped body of Jesus Christ’.
Celebrate with the school the accomplishments of the past. Pray for the new year beginning. More teachers are needed. Heavenly Wisdom is needed to deal with rebellious behavior. Heavenly Healing is needed for this wonderful group of Albanian (learning to be Kosovar) people.
